Title of Position: Manager of Competition, Labor, and Tax Issues

 

Supervisor: Assistant Vice President of Domestic Policy

 

Summary: The Manager of Competition, Labor, and Tax Issues is the lead staff advocate and subject matter expert for NPPC on these issues. This position will advocate on behalf of the industry for provisions in the tax code that affect pork producers, revisions and additions to labor programs like H-2A and other visa programs that benefit the industry’s workforce and monitor and respond to competition issues on the Federal level in both statute and regulation. This position also works closely with pork producers in understanding the implications to their farms in these issue areas and helping them understand changes (or potential changes) to these issue areas. This is a registered lobbyist position.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, research, and analyze issues related to mandatory price reporting, buying and selling hogs and pork, competition, labor, and tax, issues.
  • Advocate to the Executive Branch and the Congress on foregoing issues.
  • Prepare and keep current concise and well written background papers on foregoing issues.
  • Assist with the preparation of statements for congressional and regulatory hearings and other events.
  • Work closely with the NPPC economist who will provide technical support and guidance.
  • Coordinate with other DC office issue managers on matters that may overlap to ensure consistency in objectives, positions, and strategies.
  • Coordinate with Congressional Relations and Communications staff.
  • Prepare recommendations to the staff and Board on policy positions.
  • Participate in NPPC’s Competitive Markets Committee, NPPC’s Labor Committee, and other NPPC committees as needed.
  • Participate and lead in coalitions that further NPPC objectives.

Other Responsibilities: Take on other assignments and projects which may be outside of primary issue area as needed. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Requirements of Position:

  • Education: College or graduate degree in business or economics preferred.
  • Must have experience on Capitol Hill or in an advocacy position.
  • Have a strong understanding of executive and legislative branch operations.
  • Be highly self-motivated, work independently, highly detailed, and exercise sound judgement.
  • Have an ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, team-oriented, work environment with NPPC members/staff.
  • Be flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical analysis into executive presentations.
  • Be highly organized and able to function effectively under pressure.

Travel: Less than 20% travel. Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.

 

Location: The position is based out of WDC office.
