The 2024 Spring Packer Processor Industry Council (PPIC) Meeting brings together members of the PPIC and National Pork Board’s Retail Advisory Committee (RAC), two critical links of the pork supply chain, for updates on various topics within the pork industry. In addition to these important updates, there will be time set aside for networking and socializing between the two groups. The meeting will conclude by noon on Wednesday, May 1.

Most Americans have never been on a farm, so it is easy to understand why opinions on pork production may be based on outdated or inaccurate information. By understanding a few basic facts, more people will appreciate the important role pork production plays in providing consumers with healthy and affordable food.
Farm Bill | Protect the U.S. Food Supply

NPPC advocates for a farm bill that addresses the challenges and chaos posed by laws like Prop. 12, fully funds the programs that safeguard the nation’s food supply against threats posed by foreign animal diseases, as well as key programs that expand foreign markets for U.S. ag products.

Opening new and expanding existing markets is vital to the continued success of the U.S. pork industry. In 2023, the U.S. exported over $8.2 billion in pork and pork products to over 100 countries. Exports accounted for more than $64 in value from each hog marketed in 2023.

California Proposition 12 | Support Legislative Solution

Proposition 12 is a California ballot initiative prohibiting the sale of pork not produced according to the state’s arbitrary production standards. These standards, which were developed without input from hog farmers, veterinarians or experts in animal care or food safety, hurt farmers and consumers throughout the country, while disproportionately affecting low-income households. The facts surrounding this misguided measure must be considered as lawmakers develop a federal solution.

Labor | Strengthen the H-2A Visa Program

The H-2A visa program allows a very limited number of foreign workers entry into the U.S. for seasonal agricultural work. The seasonal workers permitted under the program do not come close to meeting the pork industry’s need for year-round workers, especially with the decline in rural working age populations. Congress must provide access to the H-2A program for year-round industries.

GIPSA | Ensure Fair Markets and Competitive Opportunities

The Packers and Stockyards Act (PSA) was enacted in 1921 to prohibit unfair, deceptive, and unjustly discriminatory practices by market agencies, dealers, stockyards, packers, swine contractors, and live poultry dealers. NPPC believes in full enforcement of the PSA to ensure fair markets and competitive opportunities for producers so that any size producer with any production system has market access and the ability to enter agreements of their choosing.
