NPPC Policy Priorities

CLICK TOPICS TO VIEW POLICY ISSUE PAPERS
  • Proposition 12 is a California ballot initiative prohibiting the sale of pork not produced according to the state’s arbitrary production standards, which were developed without input from hog farmers, veterinarians, or experts in animal care or food safety. Prop. 12, and other measures like it, hurt farmers and consumers throughout the country, while disproportionately affecting low-income households. The impending patchwork of differing state laws sets the stage for marketplace chaos.

In addition to the issue paper above, check out the costs and impacts of Prop. 12 here. We also encourage you to read congressional letters from the American Veterinary Medical Association and nearly 400 agricultural stakeholders for further insights and warnings.
  • The USMCA has cemented North America as the world’s largest trilateral agricultural trading bloc and a cornerstone of global food security. Support American agriculture by urging the administration to quickly review USMCA and not give up market access for U.S. pork.
  • The United States Swine Health Improvement Plan (U.S. SHIP) is a cooperative state-federal-industry program designed to improve the health and marketability of U.S. swine and pork products. Modeled after the National Poultry Improvement Plan, U.S. SHIP is piloted by USDA’s Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in cooperation with industry. Participants can apply for disease-specific certifications recognized across participating states. NPPC requests report language that directs USDA to create a Federal Advisory Committee for U.S. SHIP.
  • The H-2A visa program allows a very limited number of foreign workers entry into the U.S. for seasonal agricultural work. The seasonal workers permitted under the program do not come close to meeting the pork industry’s need for year-round workers, especially with the decline in rural working age populations. Congress must provide access to the H-2A program for year-round industries.
